| Name: | Oliver Wood |
|---|---|
| Birthdate: | 1976-02-02 |
| The Basics |
Character Name: Oliver Wood PB: Ewan McGregor (Daughter Wini Age: 24 Birthday: February 2nd, 1976 Wand: 8 3/4 Inches, Rowan wood, Welsh Green dragonheart string core, ridgid. House in School: Gryffindor Bloodline: Pureblood for the past six generations. Political View: Oliver never really cared much for the politics going on in the Wizarding World, focusing much more on the way the Quiddich season was going, but since his wife Ingrid Thisbe Wood was accidentally killed in an explosion caused by the fighting, shortly before the war ended, Oliver is finding himself more and more interested in politics. Oliver stands firmly with the Ministry of Magic, agreeing with their moves to try to regulate and watch anyone who might be a risk to their world. |
| Appearance |
Height: 6’2 Weight: 170, though he looks quite lean, Oliver is very well built and muscular from all of his Quiddich training. Build: He is very strong and muscular, though agile. Eyes: Hazely green. Hair: Reddish brown, generally quite scruffy looking. Dress style: Oliver does not dress especially neat, or pay much attention to any items of his wardrobe beyond his Puddlemere United Quiddich robes. He feels most comfortable in wizarding robes, but, like most Wizards of his generation, can be commonly found in muggle suits and clothes. Discerning Marks: His left pinky is permanently out of place from a bad hit with a bludger, and his nose is slightly flatter than it was during his Hogwarts years for the same reasons. |
| Personality |
Most people have never seen the real Oliver. Those who have not seen him as a father would not consider him to be gentle, as he is most famous for his outbursts concerning Quiddich. True, Oliver can be overly-bold and demanding when it comes to his sport, but Oliver also craves steadiness. He has a strong need to find order in everything in his life. Ing, his wife, calmed down his storms, but now he has no one to help him brave through the tempests of the reconstruction of the Wizarding World. In the past seven months he has found himself rather more prone to explode and his stubborn streak has doubled it’s fortitude. He has even found himself struggle to be patient with his (almost) two-year-old daughter Wini, though he did not have this problem before Ingrid died. |
| Psychology |
Introvert/Extrovert Introvert, unless he is in a position of power and authority or is under extreme stress. Oliver requires a rather silent and steady environment outside of his Quiddich interests. Boggart is? Explain. His boggart is now either a terrible and fiery explosion (as this is how his wife Ingrid died), or the dead body of his (almost)two-year-old daughter Winifred. It has been only seven months since the death of his Ingrid and Oliver has still not fully recovered Patronus Oliver cannot produce a Patronus. |
| Sexuality |
Oliver was never really one to pay much attention to anything that did not concern Quiddich, and the same has gone for his orientation. As far as he could tell, boys like girls and girls liked boys, and it would have taken too much of his attention from Quiddich to consider if he would be different. He never had any romantic relationships during his Hogwarts years since the only girls he spent time with were his Quiddich mates (Katie, Alicia, and Angelina) and he was much too busy coaching them to have romantic feelings for them. Oliver might have been a bachelor until he ended his Quiddich years, if Puddlemere United's team Healer had not been such a lovely young witch who was rather skilled at mending dented flesh, and if he had not been hit quite so many times with Bludgers that first year on Puddlemere, giving him plenty of time to fall in love with her while he was repaired. |
| Lifestyle |
Occupation: Oliver, during the time when Quiddich was halted, had a very unhappy position in the Department of Magical Games and Sports, filing old records. He hated it, and did it only until Ingrid was off maternity leave from St. Mungos. After she was able to go back to her job at the hospital, Wood began giving private flying lessons and coaching sessions to other children in Hogsmead (Rachella watched Wini while he did this), while occasionally working part-time for Quality Quiddich Supplies, as an at-home broom-repair man. This did not raise much money, but Ingrid never complained as she knew how important it was for Oliver to be out of the office he had hated (the work, not the Ministry) so much. Now that Quiddich has returned, Oliver is yet again playing Keeper for Puddlemere United. Residence: He has a small apartment in Diagon Alley. It has two bedrooms, a living room, a small kitchen that has not been used in seven months, and one bathroom. Ingrid had decorated it in blues and gold (for the Puddlemere United colors). Shortly after her death Oliver had someone come and repaint the walls and transfigure the furnishings to somber earth tones. Financial Status: Since Quiddich was halted after the beginning of the war (1996), it was mostly through Ingrid’s work as a Healer, and Oliver’s savings, that they scraped by the past four years. Now that Wood can begin playing for Puddlemere United again, he is hoping to refill his Gringott’s account and ensure a better future for Wini. |
| Family |
Parents? Homer Wood and Rachella Wood of Hogsmead. Homer is in his seventies and retired from his position in the Ministry of Magic shortly after the war broke out, feeling too old to put himself at risk for run-ins with the Death Eaters. Rachella is in her early sixties and was a wizarding children’s book illustrator before she gave birth to her first child. Siblings? Crispin Wood is 38, and not much better than a squib. He has a muggle wife (Amy) and twin sons (Jake and Blake, 9). The family is rather detached from the magical world, and prefers to have the family over at their home in Bath rather than visit Hogsmead for the holidays. Tisha Wood is 30 and works with the Department of International Wizarding Cooperation as England’s delegate to Australia, and currently resides in Perth, though she is terrific with correspondence and never fails to write her mother a weekly tell-all letter whose contents are shared with the rest of the family. She is currently in a serious relationship with an Auror down under. Family dynamics Since Oliver was so much later than his siblings, he does not know Crispin well, and Tisha mostly from correspondence. He gets along well with his folks, however, and visits them with Wini at least every other week. He never really got close to Ingrid’s family as they were Muggles who did not approve of Ingrid’s magical life, and they have never expressed a desire to spend time with Wini since the death of their daughter. The only real exception to Ingrid’s family situation is her uncle Philbert Deverill, manager of Puddlemere United, who is also estranged from his family. Oliver’s family did their best to not participate in the war, though both his parents feel pangs of regret (especially Rachella), wondering that if they, along with the others who stood aside and watched, had gotten involved on the right side that more innocents, namely Ingrid, might not have died. Since Ingrid’s death things have not been quite as comfortable between Oliver and his parents, as they are pressuring him to let them take Wini. |
| History |
Oliver Wood was born to play Quiddich. He never was very much concerned with the study of magic theory, though he stole both his father’s and brother’s wands before he was six to try to increase the flying height of his training broom. He was MVP of the Hogmead Quiddich Little League in 1982. He spent most of his first year in Hogwarts stealing away to practice flying, charming quaffles instead of doing his transfiguration homework. However, this did pay off, and he was made a Keeper in his second year. Quiddich was almost all that he lived for, and he only studied to keep his grades up high enough so that McGonagall would let him keep playing. He became Team Captain on his fourth year at Hogwarts, third year on the team. It had been one of the youngest Gryffindor teams ever, with himself being the oldest, Fred, George, Angelina and Alicia two years younger than him, Katie having only just reached her second year at Hogwarts, and than Harry Potter, the youngest Seeker on any Hogwarts team in a very long time. The pressure to prove himself, and to keep the team at the same level that Charlie Weasley had built it to, was quite daunting. It was during this time that Oliver seemed to find himself switching between the mindset of two different people. When it came to Quiddich, he became loud, demanding, and anxious. He would have to rejuvenate himself by separating himself from people, which is why he was hardly ever seen in the Gryffindor common room. When he graduated, Oliver was quickly picked up by Puddlemere United. He enjoyed playing for them, and joined the team determined to see them win the Quiddich world cup before he had to retire. Though he had always been extremely strict about his training schedule, he began doubling his exercises. One day during practice he became so exhausted that he almost fell from his broom. His captain ordered him to go see the team’s healer, Ingrid Thisbe. She was three years older than him, a Hufflepuff, who he did not remember. She was a niece of the team manager, which is why she had managed to get such a terrific job almost straight out of Healer training. Ingrid fixed a potion for Oliver to take, though she later admitted she took more than her sweet time in making it as to prolong their conversation. When Oliver left, he was not sure if he felt refreshed because of the potion, or because he had just found something else in the world that he just might come to like as much as Quiddich. Though Ingrid was younger than the usual team Healer, she was quite good at nursing Quiddich related injuries. Wood had to come to her many times for bludger damage. It was after his fifth game, having taken a nasty hit from a bludger on his left hand, that he finally gained the courage to ask her out. They were so distracted by their kissing that Ingrid forgot to heal him. Afterwards, Oliver decided to keep his pinky in it’s new bended shape as it did not effect his Quiddich, and it gave him a constant reminder of his dear ‘Ing.’ Too bad for Oliver, but Quiddich was halted at the end of 1996. He needed to provide for himself, so he took a job at the Ministry of Magic, working in the Department for Magical Games and Sports. It had looked promising at first, but since almost all sports covered by the Ministry were halted, all Oliver did was file ancient paperwork. At the same time, Ingrid took a position at St. Mungos. Oliver purposed to Ingrid after they had been together for almost two years. The circumstances surrounding their proposal were not the happiest. They had attended Dumbledore’s funeral together, along with the majority of the Wizarding community, and Oliver had been struck by the lack of time that everyone in the Wizarding world might have. When he had looked at Ingrid wiping her face with tears, he decided to marry her as soon as she would have him. They planned a quick, quiet wedding, with his parents, his sister Tisha, her uncle Philbert Deverill, the Weasley twins and anyone from the Puddlemere United team that would come. Their wedding was August 15th 1997. Ingrid went back to St. Mungos, and Oliver went back to work at the Ministry. He hated his job filing various records of games, working underground in the Ministry of Magic. However, no one knew how long the war would go on, and he wanted to provide for his beautiful bride. Though he disliked his job, Oliver still came to trust in the Ministry during this time, seeing the amount of concern that each Department put into the war. The discussion of beginning a family came up in the first few months of their marriage, even with the terrors of war around them. Ingrid had always wanted to have a large family, and wanted to begin as soon as possible. Oliver had misgivings, concerned that if they lost the war that it would not be a good world to raise a child in, but Ingrid refused to give in to fear, and they decided to have a baby as soon as possible. Wini On December 23rd, 1999, Ingrid was out buying some last minute Christmas presents for her husband and daughter with her St. Mungo’s Christmas bonus, when a Death Easter’s explosive attack on another muggle-born wizard accidentally reached her, killing her instantly. The shock of her death sent Oliver whirling, especially since she had whispered in his ear that morning that she would know by the evening if their attempts to get pregnant again had worked. He would never know if his wife had died carrying their second child. Wini was taken by her grandmother and grandfather until the end of the war in March. Homer and Rachella were safer in their home that had been owned for six generations, known to be purebloods, than an apartment in Diagon Alley that would quite likely be a target. Oliver began drinking heavily, and actually went two and a half months without touching a broom (he had never gone more than 12 hours without touching one as far back as he could remember). In late February he went to visit Wini in Hogsmead (by floo powder), and realized that he had been gone from her for over two weeks. When she was afraid to leave her grandmother, and cried when he held her, he determined to get himself back together for her. On March 14th, he received word from Philbert Deverill that Puddlemere United would be reforming in order to be ready for the beginning of the Quiddich season. That helped Oliver get himself together. He began bringing Wini home at night, Rachella still caring for her in the daytime while he trained, and decided to become the father that he had been when Ingrid was alive. His mother and father are very worried about his ability to care for Wini as a single father, and have been pressuring him to let them take care of him. He admits that he has been rather neglectful of his daughter in the past few months, but is not willing to let them take away his beautiful daughter that reminds him of his white-blonde witch of a wife. Because of the pressure they have been putting on him, Oliver has stopped taking Wini to his parents during the day, hiring a babysitter instead. |
